Stratmoor Summary

Stratmoor is a census-designated place (CDP) located in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. The population was 4,845 at the 2010 census. Stratmoor is located in the southern part of the county, just south of Colorado Springs.

History

Stratmoor was originally a small farming community, established in the late 19th century. The area was first settled by homesteaders in the 1880s, and the first post office was established in 1887. The community was named after a local rancher, William Stratton.
In the early 20th century, the area began to develop as a residential suburb of Colorado Springs. The population grew steadily throughout the 20th century, and by the 2000 census, the population had reached 4,845.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Stratmoor is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to work in Colorado Springs. The area is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,845 people, 1,845 households, and 1,323 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,154.3 people per square mile (446.3/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 462.2 per square mile (178.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,964. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,964. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
