Security Widefield Summary
Widefield is a census-designated place (CDP) located in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. It is a suburb of Colorado Springs and is part of the Colorado Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 32,374 at the 2010 census.
History
Widefield was originally part of the Widefield School District, which was established in 1949. The district was named after the wide open fields that surrounded the area. The district was annexed by the City of Colorado Springs in the late 1950s. In the early 1960s, the Widefield School District was dissolved and the area was annexed by the City of Colorado Springs.
Geography
Widefield is located at 38°48'17" North, 104°45'45" West (38.804722, -104.762500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Widefield is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to several military installations, including Fort Carson, Peterson Air Force Base, and Schriever Air Force Base.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 28,845 people, 10,845 households, and 7,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,478.3 people per square mile (1,345.2/km2). There were 11,541 housing units at an average density of 1,395.3 per square mile (538.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 81.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.9% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.7% of the population.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $51,845. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $26,845 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,845. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
