Nucla is located at 38°14′N 108°25′W (38.23, -108.41). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.
History
Nucla was founded in 1882 by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. The town was named after the nearby Nucla Mine, which was named after the Spanish word for “nucleus”. The town was originally a coal mining town, but the coal mines eventually closed in the early 1900s.
In the early 1900s, Nucla became a farming and ranching community. The town was also home to a number of uranium mines, which were active until the late 1970s.
