Fort Lupton Summary
Fort Lupton is a city located in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,541 at the 2010 census. It is a part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Fort Lupton was founded in 1836 as a trading post and military outpost by Major Stephen H. Long. The fort was named after Louis Lupton, a French-Canadian fur trader who had been trading in the area since 1822. The fort was abandoned in 1844, but the town of Fort Lupton was established in 1871.
The town was an important stop on the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, and the town grew rapidly in the late 19th century. The town was incorporated in 1885.

Fort Lupton is home to several major employers, including the Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, the Great Western Oil and Gas Company, and the Colorado Department of Transportation. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 7,344 people, 2,541 households, and 1,919 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,743.3 people per square mile (673.2/km2). There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 645.2 per square mile (249.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.45% White, 0.45% African American, 1.17% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 14.17% from other races, and 2.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 33.45% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.35.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,938. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
