Cokedale Summary

Cokedale is a small town located in Las Animas County, Colorado, United States. It is situated in the San Luis Valley, approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of Trinidad. The town was founded in 1906 as a coal mining camp and was named after the nearby Cokedale Mine. As of the 2010 census, the population of Cokedale was 441.

History

The area around Cokedale was first settled in the late 1800s by ranchers and farmers. In 1906, the Cokedale Mine was opened by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. The mine was located on the south side of the Purgatoire River, about two miles (3 km) east of the present-day town. The mine was a major producer of coal and employed hundreds of miners.
In 1907, the town of Cokedale was founded to house the miners and their families. The town was laid out in a grid pattern with wide streets and alleys. The town quickly grew to include a post office, a school, a church, a general store, a hotel, and several saloons.
By 1910, the population of Cokedale had grown to over 1,000 people. The town was incorporated in 1911 and the first mayor was elected in 1912.
The coal mining industry in Cokedale began to decline in the 1920s. By the 1930s, the population had dropped to around 500 people. The mine closed in 1941 and the town began to decline.
In the 1950s, the town was revitalized by the construction of a new highway, US Highway 160, which ran through Cokedale. The highway brought new businesses and tourists to the town.
