History
Alamosa East was first settled in the late 1800s by homesteaders. The area was originally known as East Alamosa, and was annexed by the City of Alamosa in the early 1900s. The area was officially designated as a CDP in the 2000 census.
Economy
Alamosa East is primarily a residential area, with most of its residents commuting to nearby Alamosa for work. The area is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.3/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 572.3 per square mile (221.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 0.3% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 16.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 43.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
