Aguilar Summary

Aguilar is a small town located in Las Animas County, Colorado, United States. The town is situated in the southeastern corner of the state, approximately 25 miles east of Trinidad. The population of Aguilar was 590 at the 2010 census.

History

Aguilar was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from New Mexico. The town was named after the nearby Aguilar Creek, which was named after a Spanish explorer who had passed through the area in the late 1700s. The town was originally a farming and ranching community, but in the early 1900s, coal mining became the primary industry. The coal mines provided employment for many of the town's residents, and the town grew rapidly.
In the 1920s, the town was incorporated and the population peaked at around 1,500. The coal industry declined in the 1930s, and the population of Aguilar began to decline as well. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to around 500.

Geography
