Oakes is a city located in Dickey County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 2,093 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dickey County.

History

The city of Oakes was founded in 1883 by the Northern Pacific Railroad. The city was named after James Oakes, a railroad official. The first post office was established in 1883. The city was incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Oakes is located at 46°25'17" North, 98°2'17" West (46.4214, -98.0381). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Oakes is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, as well as a number of other businesses. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a plastics factory.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,093 people, 845 households, and 545 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,744.2 people per square mile (672.7/km2). There were 917 housing units at an average density of 764.2 per square mile (295.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 845 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
