Northwood Summary

Northwood is a city located in Grand Forks County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Forks, ND–MN Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Northwood was founded in 1883 by Norwegian immigrants. The city was named after Northwood, Iowa, which was the hometown of the first settlers. The first post office was established in 1884. The city was incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Northwood is located at 47°51′N 97°17′W (47.845, -97.283). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Northwood is a small rural community with a strong agricultural base. The city is home to several businesses, including a grain elevator, a lumber yard, a feed mill, and a hardware store. The city also has a small industrial park.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,541 people, 645 households, and 431 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,279.2 people per square mile (493.2/km2). There were 690 housing units at an average density of 575.8 per square mile (222.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.93.
