Nome Summary

Nome is a city located in the state of Alaska, United States. It is the largest city in the Nome Census Area and the second largest city in the state. The city is located on the southern coast of the Seward Peninsula, on the Bering Sea. The population of Nome was 3,598 at the 2010 census, up from 3,505 at the 2000 census.

History

The area around Nome was first inhabited by the Inupiat people, who have lived in the region for thousands of years. The first European to visit the area was Vitus Bering, a Danish explorer who arrived in 1741. In the late 19th century, gold was discovered in the area, leading to a gold rush in 1898. Thousands of prospectors flocked to the area, leading to the establishment of the city of Nome in 1901.

Nome is located on the southern coast of the Seward Peninsula, on the Bering Sea. The city is located at 64°30′N 165°23′W. The city is located on a coastal plain, with the hills of the Nome-Koyukuk Mountains to the east. The city is located on the Nome River, which flows into the Bering Sea.
