Minto Summary

Minto is a small city located in Walsh County, North Dakota, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Red River of the North, and is part of the Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Minto was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Minto is located at 47°59'25" North, 97°25'45" West (47.990278, -97.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Minto was founded in 1883 by the Northern Pacific Railway. The city was named after the Earl of Minto, who was the Governor General of Canada at the time. The city was incorporated in 1887.
Minto was a major stop on the Northern Pacific Railway, and the city was a hub for the surrounding agricultural area. The city was also home to a large brickyard, which produced bricks for many of the buildings in the area.

Economy

Minto's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, and the surrounding area is home to many farms. The city is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 686.6 per square mile (265.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
