McHenry is a small city located in McHenry County, North Dakota, United States. The city is situated on the banks of the Mouse River, and is the county seat of McHenry County. The population of McHenry was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

McHenry is located at 47°51'17" North, 99°17'45" West (47.854722, -99.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

History

McHenry was founded in 1883 by the Northern Pacific Railroad. The city was named after William McHenry, a railroad official. The city was incorporated in 1887.

Economy

McHenry's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank. The city also has a small airport, which is used for recreational flying.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 279 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 686.6 per square mile (265.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
