Mapleton Summary
Mapleton is a city located in Cass County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area.
History
Mapleton was founded in 1882 by a group of settlers from Minnesota. The city was named after the nearby Maple River. The first post office was established in 1883. The city was incorporated in 1887.

Economy
Mapleton's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, as well as a number of small businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 762 housing units at an average density of 631.2 per square mile (244.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.11% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.08% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
