Mapleton Summary

Mapleton is a city located in Cass County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area.

History

Mapleton was founded in 1882 by a group of settlers from Minnesota. The city was named after the nearby Maple River. The first post office was established in 1883. The city was incorporated in 1887.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Mapleton's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, as well as a number of small businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 762 housing units at an average density of 631.2 per square mile (244.2/km2).
