Mandaree Summary

Mandaree is a small unincorporated community located in the northwest corner of North Dakota, in the heart of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. The community is home to the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation, also known as the Three Affiliated Tribes. The population of Mandaree was estimated to be 545 in 2019.

History

The Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation have lived in the area for centuries, and the Mandaree community has been in existence since the late 1800s. The community was originally known as “Little Muddy”, and was a trading post for the Three Affiliated Tribes. In the early 1900s, the community was renamed “Mandaree”, after the Mandan Chief, Little Muddy.
