History
Linton was founded in 1883 by the Northern Pacific Railroad. It was named after the railroad's chief engineer, William Linton. The city was incorporated in 1885.
Economy
Linton is the economic center of Emmons County. The city is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a pharmacy, and a variety of restaurants. The city also has a hospital, a nursing home, and a clinic.
The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a concrete plant, a grain elevator, and a lumber mill.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,541 people, 645 households, and 393 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,279.2 inhabitants per square mile (493.2/km2). There were 717 housing units at an average density of 598.3 per square mile (231.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 645 households, of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 40.3% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.97.
The median age in the city was 41.2 years. 24.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.7% were from 25 to 44; 25.3% were from 45 to 64; and 21.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.2% male and 51.8% female.

Linton is served by the Linton Public School District. The district has one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school. The district also has a preschool and a daycare center.

Linton is served by the Linton Municipal Airport, which is located two miles south of the city. The airport has one runway and is used primarily for general aviation.
