Linton is a city located in Emmons County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Emmons County.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

Linton was founded in 1883 by the Northern Pacific Railroad. It was named after the railroad's chief engineer, William Linton. The city was incorporated in 1885.

Economy

Linton is the economic center of Emmons County. The city is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a pharmacy, and a variety of restaurants. The city also has a hospital, a nursing home, and a clinic.
The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a concrete plant, a grain elevator, and a lumber mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,541 people, 645 households, and 393 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,279.2 inhabitants per square mile (493.2/km2). There were 717 housing units at an average density of 598.3 per square mile (231.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
