Four Bears Village Summary
Four Bears Village is a small unincorporated community located in the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in Mountrail County, North Dakota. It is located on the south shore of Lake Sakakawea, approximately 20 miles northwest of New Town. The population of Four Bears Village was estimated to be around 200 people in 2020.
History
Four Bears Village was established in the early 1900s by the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation, also known as the Three Affiliated Tribes. The village was named after the famous Mandan chief, Four Bears, who was a leader of the tribe during the early 1800s. The village was originally a trading post and a place for the tribe to gather and socialize.
In the early 1900s, the village was home to a school, a post office, and a trading post. The school was established in 1910 and was the first school in the area. The post office was established in 1912 and the trading post was established in 1915.
In the 1950s, the village was relocated to its current location on the south shore of Lake Sakakawea. The relocation was necessary due to the construction of the Garrison Dam, which created the lake. The relocation of the village was completed in 1956.
Geography
Four Bears Village is located in the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in Mountrail County, North Dakota. It is located on the south shore of Lake Sakakawea, approximately 20 miles northwest of New Town. The village is situated on a small peninsula that juts out into the lake.
The village is surrounded by rolling hills and prairies. The area is mostly flat with some low hills and valleys. The climate is semi-arid with hot summers and cold winters. The average annual temperature is around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Economy
The economy of Four Bears Village is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several farms that produce a variety of crops, including wheat, corn, and soybeans.
