Wells County Summary
Wells County is located in the northeastern corner of North Dakota, and is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It is part of the Devils Lake Micropolitan Statistical Area, and is the second-largest county in the state by area. The county seat is Fessenden, and the largest city is Harvey.
History
Wells County was established in 1884, and was named after the first governor of North Dakota, John Miller Wells. The county was originally part of the Dakota Territory, and was part of the original counties created when North Dakota became a state in 1889.
The first settlers in Wells County were mostly of German and Scandinavian descent, and the county was largely agricultural. The county was also home to several Native American tribes, including the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara.
Geography
Wells County is located in the northeastern corner of North Dakota, and is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The county is mostly flat, with rolling hills in the western part. The highest point in the county is the summit of the Turtle Mountains, which has an elevation of 2,845 feet. The county is drained by the Sheyenne River, which flows through the county from west to east.

Wells County has a largely agricultural economy, with the majority of the population employed in farming and ranching. The county is also home to several oil and gas fields, and is a major producer of oil and natural gas.
