St Regis Summary
St. Regis is a small town located in Mineral County, Montana, United States. It is situated on the Clark Fork River, near the Idaho border. The town was founded in 1891 and named after the St. Regis River, which flows through the area. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.
Geography
St. Regis is located at 47°37′N 115°45′W (47.619, -115.749). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
History
St. Regis was founded in 1891 by the Northern Pacific Railway. The town was named after the St. Regis River, which flows through the area. The town was originally a logging and mining town, and the area was home to several sawmills and a large copper smelter.
The town was incorporated in 1909 and the first mayor was elected in 1910. The town was a popular tourist destination in the early 20th century, and the St. Regis Hotel was built in 1912. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1921, but was rebuilt and is still in operation today.
