West Point is a city located in Cuming County, Nebraska, United States. It is the county seat of Cuming County and is located along the Elkhorn River. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 3,364.
Geography
West Point is located at 42°7'25" North, 96°30'25" West (42.123611, -96.506944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
History
West Point was founded in 1857 by a group of settlers from Germany. The city was named after the nearby West Point Military Academy in New York. The city was incorporated in 1876 and has since grown to become the largest city in Cuming County.
Economy
West Point is a major agricultural center in the region. The city is home to several large grain elevators and a number of other agricultural businesses. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a large meat packing plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,364 people, 1,346 households, and 890 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 1,446 housing units at an average density of 656.2 per square mile (253.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.30% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.02% of the population.
There were 1,346 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $44,938. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,938. About 5.2% of families and 7.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.7% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
