Tilden Summary
Tilden is a small town located in Madison County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated in the northeastern corner of the state, approximately 20 miles south of Norfolk. The population of Tilden was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Tilden was founded in 1887 by a group of settlers from Germany. The town was named after Samuel J. Tilden, the Democratic presidential candidate in the 1876 election. The first post office was established in 1888.
Tilden was incorporated as a village in 1891. The town grew rapidly in the early 20th century, and by 1910, it had a population of over 1,000.
Geography
Tilden is located at 42°14'25" North, 97°25'17" West (42.240278, -97.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Tilden's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses producing a variety of products.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 663.2 per square mile (256.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $16,845.
