Thayer is a small city located in the southeastern corner of Nebraska, in the United States. It is situated in Thayer County, and is the county seat. The area that is now Thayer was first settled in 1871 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was originally named “Thayer City” after the first settler, John Thayer. The town was officially incorporated in 1873.
In the late 19th century, Thayer was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a creamery. The town also had a number of businesses, including a hotel, a bank, and a newspaper.
In the early 20th century, Thayer experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The town was home to several manufacturing businesses, including a furniture factory, a brickyard, and a canning factory. The town also had a number of retail stores, including a department store, a drug store, and a hardware store.

Geography

Thayer is located at 40°45'25" North, 96°45'25" West (40.756944, -96.756944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Thayer’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a creamery. The town also has a number of businesses, including a hotel, a bank, and a newspaper.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 681.3 per square mile (263.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 6.7% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
