Shelton is a small village located in Buffalo County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Platte River, approximately 20 miles south of Kearney. The population of Shelton was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Shelton was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Iowa. The town was named after a local settler, William Shelton. The first post office was established in 1872. The town was incorporated in 1887.
In the early days, Shelton was a farming community, with many of the settlers growing wheat, corn, and other crops. The town also had a number of businesses, including a hotel, a bank, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the late 19th century, the railroad came to Shelton, bringing with it a new era of growth and prosperity. The railroad allowed the town to become a shipping center for the surrounding area. The railroad also brought new businesses to the town, including a lumberyard, a grain elevator, and a creamery.

Shelton is located at 40°45'25" North, 99°7'25" West (40.756944, -99.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Shelton’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a number of farms and ranches. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 377.5 per square mile (145.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 5.3% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
