Seward Summary
Seward, Nebraska is a city located in Seward County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 6,964 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Seward County. Seward is located on the Platte River, approximately 40 miles southwest of Lincoln, the state capital.
History
Seward was founded in 1868 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The city was named after William H. Seward, the United States Secretary of State under President Abraham Lincoln. The city was incorporated in 1871.
In the late 19th century, Seward was a major stop on the Union Pacific Railroad. The railroad brought many new settlers to the area, and the city grew rapidly. By the early 20th century, Seward had become a thriving agricultural center.
Geography
Seward is located at 40°54'25" North, 97°7'25" West (40.906833, -97.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Seward is a major agricultural center in Nebraska. The city is home to several large grain elevators, as well as a number of other agricultural businesses. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a large furniture factory.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 6,964 people, 2,717 households, and 1,743 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,664.3 people per square mile (641.3/km2). There were 2,945 housing units at an average density of 699.3 per square mile (269.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 2,717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $51,944. Males had a median income of $35,944 versus $25,944 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,944. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
