Rising City Summary
Rising City is a village in Butler County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lincoln, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Rising City was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Germany. The village was named after the nearby town of Rising, which was named after the nearby creek. The settlers were attracted to the area due to its fertile soil and abundant water supply. The first post office was established in 1872 and the village was incorporated in 1887.
Geography
Rising City is located at 41°14'25" North, 97°14'17" West (41.240278, -97.238333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Rising City’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 221 housing units at an average density of 360.3 per square mile (139.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males.
