Papillion, Nebraska is a city located in Sarpy County, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The population was 18,894 at the 2010 census.
History
Papillion was founded in 1870 by a group of settlers from Omaha. The city was named after the creek that ran through the area, which was named after the French word for butterfly. The city was incorporated in 1876 and has grown steadily since then.
Geography
Papillion is located at 41°09'45" North, 96°02'45" West (41.1625, -96.0458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.5 km2), of which 8.6 square miles (22.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Papillion has a strong economy, with a variety of businesses and industries. The city is home to several large employers, including Sarpy County, the City of Papillion, the Papillion-La Vista School District, and the Offutt Air Force Base. The city also has a number of smaller businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 18,894 people, 7,072 households, and 5,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,192.3 people per square mile (845.2/km2). There were 7,521 housing units at an average density of 871.3 per square mile (336.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.2% of the population.
There were 7,072 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
