Overland Summary

Overland is a city located in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 8,569.

Geography

Overland is located at 41°14'25" North, 96°2'17" West (41.240278, -96.038194). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

History

The area that is now Overland was first settled in the late 1800s. The city was originally known as "Overland Park" and was incorporated in 1917. The name was changed to "Overland" in 1921.
Overland experienced rapid growth in the 1950s and 1960s, due to its proximity to Omaha. The city was home to a number of large manufacturing plants, including the former Overland Park Mall, which was the largest shopping center in the state at the time.

Economy

Overland is home to a number of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Omaha World-Herald newspaper.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,569 people, 3,521 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,039.2 people per square mile (788.3/km2). There were 3,717 housing units at an average density of 886.2 per square mile (342.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 3,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
