Orleans Summary

Orleans, Nebraska is a small town located in Harlan County, in the south-central part of the state. It is situated on the banks of the Republican River, and is the county seat of Harlan County. The town was founded in 1871, and was named after the city of Orleans, France. As of the 2010 census, the population of Orleans was 545.

Geography

Orleans is located at 40°37'25"N, 99°17'45"W (40.623607, -99.295890). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Orleans is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, and the surrounding area is used for growing corn, soybeans, and wheat. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 225 households, and 145 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 250 housing units at an average density of 411.7 per square mile (158.9/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 225 households, out of which 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 33.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
