Offutt AFB Summary
Offutt Air Force Base (AFB) is located in Sarpy County, Nebraska, just south of Omaha. It is the home of the United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) and the 55th Wing of the Air Combat Command (ACC). Offutt AFB is the largest employer in the Omaha metropolitan area, with more than 10,000 military and civilian personnel.
History
Offutt AFB was established in 1918 as an Army Air Service base. It was named after World War I pilot, 1st Lt. Jarvis Offutt, who was killed in action in France. During World War II, Offutt AFB was used as a training base for B-17 and B-29 bombers. In 1948, the base was transferred to the newly formed United States Air Force and became the home of the Strategic Air Command (SAC). During the Cold War, Offutt AFB was the headquarters of SAC and the home of the nation’s nuclear deterrent force.
In 1992, SAC was disbanded and replaced by USSTRATCOM. USSTRATCOM is responsible for the nation’s nuclear forces, space operations, information operations, global strike, and missile defense. Offutt AFB is the headquarters of USSTRATCOM and the home of the 55th Wing of the Air Combat Command (ACC). The 55th Wing is responsible for providing combat-ready airpower to the nation.
Geography
Offutt AFB is located in Sarpy County, Nebraska, just south of Omaha. It is situated on the east bank of the Missouri River, approximately 10 miles south of Omaha. The base covers an area of approximately 5,000 acres and is bordered by the cities of Bellevue, La Vista, and Papillion.
The base is located in a flat, open area with few trees. The terrain is mostly grassland, with some areas of marshland and wooded areas. The climate is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters.
