O Neill Summary
O'Neill is a city located in the northeastern corner of the state of Nebraska in the United States. It is the county seat of Holt County and the largest city in the county. The population of O'Neill was 3,722 at the 2010 census.
Geography
O'Neill is located at 42°3′17″N 98°37′17″W (42.054722, -98.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.17 square miles (5.62 km2), all of it land.
History
O'Neill was founded in 1887 by John O'Neill, a railroad contractor. The city was named after him. The city was incorporated in 1891.
Economy
O'Neill is the economic center of Holt County. The city is home to several businesses, including a hospital, a bank, a grocery store, a hardware store, and a variety of other retail stores. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics plant, a metal fabrication plant, and a food processing plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 3,722 people, 1,541 households, and 990 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,711.2 people per square mile (661.2/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 793.2 per square mile (306.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,541 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,938. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
