Neligh is a city located in Antelope County, Nebraska, United States. It is the county seat of Antelope County and is located along the Elkhorn River. The population was 1,631 at the 2010 census.
History
Neligh was founded in 1873 by the Union Pacific Railroad. It was named after Chief Neligh of the Omaha Tribe. The city was incorporated in 1883.
Geography
Neligh is located at 41°59'25" North, 98°2'25" West (41.990278, -98.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Neligh is a small agricultural community. The main industries are farming, ranching, and manufacturing. The city is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,631 people, 690 households, and 441 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,346.2 people per square mile (519.3/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 614.2 per square mile (236.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.45% White, 0.12% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.86% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 20.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 24.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $40,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females.
