History

The area that is now Mitchell was first settled in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the railroad's president, John Mitchell. The town was incorporated in 1891.

The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 4.3% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
