Maxwell Summary

Maxwell is a small town located in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Platte River, approximately 20 miles west of Lincoln. The population of Maxwell was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Maxwell was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Iowa. The town was named after a local rancher, William Maxwell. The first post office was established in 1872.
In 1873, the Union Pacific Railroad built a line through the town, which helped to spur growth. The town was incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Maxwell is located at 40°45'25" North, 97°17'45" West (40.756944, -97.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Maxwell's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 662.2 per square mile (255.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
