Martinsburg Summary

Martinsburg, Nebraska is a small village located in the southeastern corner of Butler County, Nebraska. It is situated on the banks of the Platte River, approximately 20 miles south of Lincoln. The village was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania, and was named after Martin Van Buren, the 8th President of the United States.

History

The first settlers to arrive in the area were a group of Pennsylvania Dutch, who arrived in 1871. They were led by a man named John Martin, who had purchased the land from the government. The settlers built a small log cabin and began to farm the land. The village was officially incorporated in 1873, and the first post office was established in 1874.
The village grew slowly, but steadily, over the years. In 1883, the first school was built, and in 1885, the first church was established. The village also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.
In the early 1900s, the village began to experience a period of growth. The population increased from just over 200 in 1900 to nearly 500 by 1910. This growth was due in part to the arrival of the railroad, which connected the village to the rest of the state.
The village continued to grow throughout the 20th century. In the 1950s, the population reached its peak of nearly 800. However, the population has since declined, and as of the 2010 census, the population was just over 500.
