Magnet is a village in Nance County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 97 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Island, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The village of Magnet was founded in 1887 by a group of settlers from Germany. The village was named after the nearby Magnet Creek, which was named for the large deposits of iron ore found in the area. The iron ore was used to make magnets, hence the name.
In the early 1900s, Magnet was a thriving community with a population of over 500 people. The village had a post office, a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a bank, a school, and several churches.
The village began to decline in the mid-1900s as the iron ore deposits were depleted and the population began to move away. By the 1970s, the population had dropped to less than 100 people.

The economy of Magnet is largely based on agriculture. The village is surrounded by farms and ranches, and many of the residents are employed in the agricultural industry.

As of the census of 2000, there were 97 people, 41 households, and 28 families residing in the village. The population density was 486.3 people per square mile (188.2/km2). There were 41 households, out of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.0 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $13,945.
