Macy Summary

Macy is a village in Thurston County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sioux City, IA–NE–SD Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Macy was founded in 1887 by the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska. The village was named after Chief Big Elk, also known as Chief Macy. The Omaha Tribe had been living in the area since the late 1700s. The village was incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Macy was a thriving community with a population of over 500 people. The village had a post office, a bank, a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, a school, and a church.
In the 1920s, Macy began to decline as the railroad bypassed the village. The population dropped to less than 200 by the 1950s.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Macy is a small rural community with a population of 545 people. The village is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, a restaurant, and a bank.
The village is also home to the Macy Indian School, which is operated by the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska. The school serves students in grades K-12.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 197 households, and 140 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,816.7 people per square mile (700.3/km2). There were 211 housing units at an average density of 703.3 per square mile (271.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 75.3% White, 0.2% African American, 19.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 4.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
