Lexington Summary

History

The area that is now Lexington was first settled in 1871 by a group of settlers from Lexington, Kentucky. The town was originally named Plum Creek, but was later changed to Lexington in 1873. The town was officially incorporated in 1875.
In the late 19th century, Lexington was a major stop on the Union Pacific Railroad. The railroad brought many new settlers to the area, and the town quickly grew. By the early 20th century, Lexington had become a major agricultural center, with a large livestock market and several grain elevators.

Geography

Lexington is located in central Nebraska, along the Platte River. It is about 50 miles west of Grand Island and about 90 miles northwest of Lincoln. The city has a total area of 5.3 square miles, all of which is land.

Economy

The economy of Lexington is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large grain elevators and a large livestock market. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a large meatpacking plant.

As of the 2010 census, there were 10,230 people, 3,845 households, and 2,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,927.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 9.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 18.2% of the population.
