History
Leigh was founded in 1887 by German immigrants who had come to the area from Wisconsin. The town was named after Leigh, Wisconsin, the hometown of the first settlers. The first post office was established in 1888.
Geography
Leigh is located at 41°59'25" North, 97°17'45" West (41.990278, -97.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Leigh is a small rural community with a population of 845 people. The economy is largely based on agriculture, with corn, soybeans, and wheat being the main crops. There are also several small businesses in the area, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 845 people, 339 households, and 233 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,408.3 people per square mile (543.7/km2). There were 369 housing units at an average density of 609.2 per square mile (234.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.1% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 339 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.3% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females.
