Laurel is a city located in Cedar County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cedar County.

History

Laurel was founded in 1871 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the laurel shrubs that grew in the area. The first post office was established in 1872. The city was incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Laurel is located at 41°45'7" North, 97°14'7" West (41.751944, -97.235278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Laurel is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a lumber yard.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,364.2 people per square mile (912.3/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 962.2 per square mile (371.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.90% White, 0.21% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.19% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $43,750. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
