La Vista Summary

La Vista, Nebraska is a city located in Sarpy County, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The population was 16,346 at the 2010 census.

History

La Vista was founded in 1960 by the Omaha-based real estate development firm of Kiewit and Kiewit. The city was named after the Spanish phrase for "the view," and was intended to be a residential community. The first homes were built in 1961, and the city was incorporated in 1966.

Geography

La Vista is located at 41°10'25" North, 96°3'17" West (41.173611, -96.054722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

La Vista is home to several large employers, including the headquarters of TD Ameritrade, Valmont Industries, and the Nebraska Furniture Mart. The city also has a number of smaller businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 16,346 people, 6,541 households, and 4,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,019.3 people per square mile (779.2/km2). There were 6,845 housing units at an average density of 845.2 per square mile (326.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 2.2% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 6,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,945, and the median income for a family was $63,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
