Harbine Summary
Harbine is a small unincorporated community located in Johnson County, Nebraska. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the state, approximately 20 miles south of the state capital of Lincoln. The population of Harbine was estimated to be around 200 people in 2020.
History
Harbine was founded in 1887 by a group of settlers from Iowa. The town was named after the nearby Harbine Creek, which was named after a local Native American chief. The town was originally a farming community, and the main crops grown were corn, wheat, and oats. In the early 1900s, the town began to grow and develop, and a post office was established in 1906.
In the 1920s, the town began to experience a period of growth and prosperity. The population increased from around 200 people in 1920 to over 500 people by 1930. During this time, the town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a bank.
In the 1940s, the town experienced a decline in population as many of the residents moved away to find work in larger cities. By 1950, the population had dropped to around 200 people.
