Foster Summary

Foster is a village in Platte County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Island, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Foster was founded in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The village was named after the Foster family, who were early settlers in the area. The first post office was established in 1887.

Economy

Foster is a small rural community with a population of 545 people. The economy is largely based on agriculture, with corn, soybeans, and wheat being the main crops. There are also several small businesses in the village, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,845.2 people per square mile (717.2/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 762.2 per square mile (295.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.18% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females.
