Exeter Summary

Exeter is a small city located in Fillmore County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the state, approximately 40 miles south of Lincoln and 40 miles north of Beatrice. The population of Exeter was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Exeter was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Exeter, Ohio, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1872.
In 1873, the first school was built in Exeter. The first church was built in 1875. The first newspaper, the Exeter News, was established in 1876.

In 1881, the first railroad line was built through Exeter. This line connected Exeter to Lincoln and Beatrice.

Geography

Exeter is located at 40°45'25" North, 97°17'45" West (40.756944, -97.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Exeter's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant.
Exeter is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a lumber yard, a restaurant, and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 686.6 per square mile (265.3/km2).
