Dorchester Summary

Dorchester is a small village located in Saline County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Platte River, approximately 20 miles south of Lincoln. The population of Dorchester was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Dorchester was founded in 1871 by a group of German immigrants who had settled in the area. The town was named after Dorchester, Massachusetts, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Dorchester was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a saloon.

Geography

Dorchester is located at 40°45'25" North, 96°51'45" West (40.756944, -96.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy
