Dawson Summary

Dawson is a village in Dawson County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dawson County.

History

Dawson was founded in 1871 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the railroad's president, William C. Dawson. The first post office was established in 1872.

Economy

Dawson is a small agricultural community. The main industries are farming and ranching. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 229 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 248 housing units at an average density of 404.2 per square mile (155.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.18% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.
There were 229 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,945.
