Columbus Summary
Columbus, Nebraska is a city located in Platte County, Nebraska, United States. It is the county seat of Platte County and is located along the Loup River. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 22,111, making it the second-largest city in Nebraska.
History
The area that is now Columbus was first settled in 1856 by a group of settlers from Columbus, Ohio. The town was originally named "Columbia" after the nearby Platte River, but the name was changed to "Columbus" in 1858. The city was officially incorporated in 1874.
In the late 19th century, Columbus was a major stop on the Union Pacific Railroad, and the city grew rapidly. By the early 20th century, it had become a major agricultural center, with a variety of industries, including a large sugar beet processing plant.
Geography
Columbus is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and Nebraska Highway 15, about 50 miles northwest of Omaha. The city is situated on the banks of the Loup River, which flows through the city. The city is located in the Platte River Valley, which is part of the Great Plains region of the United States.
The city has a total area of 11.2 square miles, of which 11.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.
Economy
The economy of Columbus is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural companies, including Cargill, Inc., which operates a large grain elevator in the city.
