Clatonia Summary

Clatonia is a village in Gage County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lincoln, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Clatonia was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The village was named after Clatonia, Ohio, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office in Clatonia was established in 1872.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Clatonia is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 517 people, 197 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,717.2 people per square mile (662.2/km2). There were 211 housing units at an average density of 697.2 per square mile (268.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.84% White, 0.19% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.58% of the population.
There were 197 households, out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.4% were married couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.4% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $30,625 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845.
