Bertrand was founded in 1887 by a group of settlers from Sweden. The village was named after a Swedish immigrant, John Bertrand, who was one of the first settlers in the area. The village was incorporated in 1891, and the first post office was established in 1892.
In the early 1900s, Bertrand was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a bank. The village also had a school, a church, and a library.
In the 1950s, the village began to decline as many of the businesses closed and the population decreased. In the late 1970s, the village was revitalized when a new school was built and a new library was opened.
