Benkelman Summary

Benkelman is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Nebraska, in Dundy County. It is situated on the banks of the Republican River, and is the county seat of Dundy County. The town was founded in 1885 and was named after a local rancher, John Benkelman.

Geography

Benkelman is located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 34 and Nebraska Highway 23. It is situated in the High Plains region of the Great Plains, and is surrounded by rolling hills and prairies. The town is located at an elevation of 3,072 feet above sea level. The climate is semi-arid, with hot summers and cold winters. The average annual precipitation is 17.5 inches.

Economy

The economy of Benkelman is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, and the surrounding area is used for growing corn, wheat, and sorghum. The town also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses producing a variety of products. The town is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, Benkelman had a population of 1,072. The racial makeup of the town was 95.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
