Arlington is a village in Washington County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,039 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Arlington was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Arlington, Ohio, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1872.
In 1873, the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad was built through the town, and the village was incorporated in 1875. The railroad brought new settlers to the area, and the population grew rapidly. By 1880, the population had reached 845.

Geography

Arlington is located at 41°25'25" North, 96°25'17" West (41.423, -96.421). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Arlington is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,039 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 672.2 per square mile (259.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.86% White, 0.19% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.48% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females.
