Somerset Summary

Somerset is a village located in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.

History

Somerset was first settled in 1854 by a group of Norwegian immigrants. The village was named after Somerset, England, and was incorporated in 1891. The first post office was established in 1856.

Geography

Somerset is located at 45°7'25" North, 92°45'25" West (45.123611, -92.756944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Somerset is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a pharmacy, a gas station, and several restaurants. The village also has a public library and a community center.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,717 people, 1,039 households, and 745 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,220.3 people per square mile (470.3/km2). There were 1,093 housing units at an average density of 487.3 per square mile (188.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.11% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.48% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
